I’ve listened to Ta-Nehisi Coates narrate his own work before (*Between the World and Me*), but *The Message* takes that intimacy to another level. His cadence here is less monologue and more direct address—you feel like you’re eavesdropping on a conversation where the stakes couldn’t be higher, but the delivery never slips into sermonizing. The standout is his essay on French identity, which cracks open the myth of universalism with surgical precision. That section alone is worth the price of admission, especially when Coates’ voice drops into a near-whisper to underscore a point, making the audiobook feel like a secret shared across continents. That said, the production isn’t flawless. A few transitions between essays feel abrupt, as if the editor wanted to preserve Coates’ unfiltered pacing at the cost of flow. And while his narration is magnetic, there were moments I wished for a counterpoint—another voice to challenge his perspectives, even subtly. Still, if you crave audiobooks that feel like a masterclass in both craft and conviction, this is a front-row seat with no bad angles.
