I went into *Emerald Planet* expecting another derivative dystopian wasteland story, but Huff delivered something far more interesting: a reality TV nightmare where the contestants are gladiators, the audience is the entire planet, and the prize is survival. The premise is so absurdly compelling that I couldn’t look away, even when the logic occasionally stumbled. The world feels like a fever dream of late-stage capitalism and ancient Rome, with just enough sci-fi twists to keep it fresh. The fight scenes are visceral, the politics are cutthroat, and the sheer audacity of the setting left me grinning more than once. That said, the story’s brevity works against it—key character motivations are glossed over, and some twists feel rushed rather than earned. It’s a shame, because the worldbuilding had potential to be something truly special. By the end, I was satisfied but still hungry for more depth. The narration is where things get divisive. Virtual Voice’s performance is crisp and energetic, which matches the story’s frenetic pace, but it lacks the warmth and subtlety of a human narrator. The AI’s monotone delivery occasionally makes dramatic moments feel flat, almost like listening to a text-to-speech demo. That said, the clarity is fantastic, and the pacing never drags, which is a miracle given the book’s length. My biggest critique? The AI struggles with the few non-English phrases sprinkled throughout the book, mangling pronunciation in a way that’s jarring rather than immersive. It’s a minor flaw in an otherwise tightly produced audiobook, but one that pulled me out of the experience more than once. If you can overlook the narration quirks, *Emerald Planet* is a wild, adrenaline-fueled ride that punches well above its weight.
