The Veetanho aren’t mustache-twirling villains; they’re chillingly pragmatic, and their control over the Guild feels like watching a python slowly digest its prey. I loved how Taylor weaves in the fallout of the Great Galactic War not through infodumps, but through offhand remarks and the way characters flinch at certain names. It’s the kind of worldbuilding that rewards attention. McLaren’s narration is *perfect* for this material—his voice has the weariness of a soldier who’s seen one too many "last stands," and he nails the dry, dark humor that keeps the tone from drowning in cynicism. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The sheer number of factions and acronyms (I lost count of how many times I had to rewind to remember what the "HC" stood for) can be overwhelming, and the middle act drags slightly as Taylor sets up dominoes for what I assume is a explosive finale. But when the payoffs hit? *Oh*, they hit. The final act’s betrayal left me actually gasping in my car. If you love your sci-fi with more intrigue than laser battles and don’t mind a narrative that demands your full attention, this is a standout. Just maybe keep a notepad handy for the politics.
