I started listening to *The Dark Before the Light* on a cross-country flight, thinking it’d be a pleasant distraction. Four hours later, I missed my layover. McLaren’s narration is nothing short of transformative—he doesn’t just voice characters; he *inhabits* the exhaustion of a fleet commander watching his people starve, the desperation of a diplomat trying to broker peace with a race that views mercy as weakness, and the primal terror of something old and hungry circling your ship in the dark. The story’s relentless momentum is its greatest strength, but also its occasional weakness: by the final act, I was emotionally wrung out, stretched thin by the constant betrayals and losses. That’s not a flaw—it’s proof Taylor and McLaren work in tandem to make you *feel* every ounce of pressure these characters endure. That said, the audiobook isn’t without quirks. McLaren’s voicing of non-human characters occasionally defaults to what sounds like a mid-Atlantic accent, which clashes with the otherwise immersive realism of the human cast.
