About This Audiobook

Tim C. Taylor crafts a relentless first-contact thriller where the universe’s deadliest predators aren’t alien invaders—they’re the ones your own side never saw coming. *The Dark Before the Light* isn’t just another space opera; it’s a brutal endurance race against time, betrayal, and something lurking in the void that chews stars for breakfast. The Goltar alliance—already fractured from within—faces extinction not just from the Endless Night’s monstrous Tyzhounes, but from their own collapsing alliances. Taylor’s worldbuilding is a masterclass in claustrophobic dread: the Spine Nebula’s shifting currents, the claustrophobic dread of starving in a war-torn armada, and the gnawing paranoia that the next person you trust might be the one who dooms you all. If you’ve ever wanted fiction where the real enemy isn’t aliens, but human greed and hubris, this is your audiobook.

Narrator Todd McLaren doesn’t just deliver lines—he *breathes* the tension. His performance oscillates between guttural urgency (imagine a starship captain screaming orders as hull breaches scream back) and eerie, whisper-quiet dread (perfect for those creeping Tyzhounes moments). The pacing is relentless but precise, with McLaren’s pacing shifting as naturally as the nebula’s treacherous currents. Taylor’s prose translates flawlessly to audio, with McLaren’s voice becoming the gravitational pull that keeps you locked in for 14 hours. This is science fiction for listeners who want their existential threats served with a side of raw, unfiltered humanity.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I started listening to *The Dark Before the Light* on a cross-country flight, thinking it’d be a pleasant distraction. Four hours later, I missed my layover. McLaren’s narration is nothing short of transformative—he doesn’t just voice characters; he *inhabits* the exhaustion of a fleet commander watching his people starve, the desperation of a diplomat trying to broker peace with a race that views mercy as weakness, and the primal terror of something old and hungry circling your ship in the dark. The story’s relentless momentum is its greatest strength, but also its occasional weakness: by the final act, I was emotionally wrung out, stretched thin by the constant betrayals and losses. That’s not a flaw—it’s proof Taylor and McLaren work in tandem to make you *feel* every ounce of pressure these characters endure. That said, the audiobook isn’t without quirks. McLaren’s voicing of non-human characters occasionally defaults to what sounds like a mid-Atlantic accent, which clashes with the otherwise immersive realism of the human cast. And while the Tyzhounes are terrifying in concept, their descriptions lean so hard on Lovecraftian dread that they sometimes verge on parody—imagine Cthulhu if he got his tentacles caught in a fishing net. But these are minor niggles in an otherwise masterful performance. If you’re a fan of military SF with teeth, or anyone who’s ever stayed up too late reading under the covers (we’ve all done it), this audiobook will haunt you long after the last chapter. Just maybe don’t listen alone in a dark room.
