Ruby’s world is one where people like her are reduced to commodities, and the narration’s emotional distance mirrors the systemic indifference she’s fighting. It’s a risky move, but it pays off, especially in the tense interrogation scenes where the lack of inflection makes the dialogue feel eerily transactional. The story itself is a masterclass in economical plotting. Rivers doesn’t waste time on bloated lore dumps; instead, Ruby’s journalism skills double as worldbuilding, with her investigations revealing the magic industry’s horrors in bite-sized exposés. The heist-at-its-core structure keeps the momentum high, though I wished for more breathing room in the middle—some character moments (like Ruby’s fraught dynamic with her human mother) get shortchanged in the rush. And while the magic system is brilliant in its brutality, the rules around blood potency could use a touch more clarity; I found myself rewinding a few times to parse how certain powers scaled. Still, the finale’s twist—where Ruby’s biggest weapon isn’t magic but *publicity*—is so satisfyingly meta that I immediately wanted to discuss it with someone. This isn’t a cozy escape; it’s a call to arms disguised as a fantasy thriller.
