Anderz Eide’s narration of *A Weak Heart* is the kind of performance that makes you forget you’re listening to a recording. His voice has a gravelly, lived-in quality that suits Dostoevsky’s unflinching portrayal of a man unraveling in real time. The way he modulates between the narrator’s brittle self-pity and the occasional flare of venom is masterful—you can practically hear the cracks forming in the man’s facade. There were moments, though, when the delivery leaned a little too hard into the “tortured soul” archetype, particularly in the climax, where Eide’s intensity bordered on operatic. A touch more subtlety there might have made the devastation even more piercing. The story itself is a marvel of compression: in under two hours, Dostoevsky distills existential dread into a scathing character study. The narrator’s descent feels inevitable, not because of any external force, but because of his own cowardice and delusion. The twist—when it arrives—is less a revelation than a gut punch, confirming what the listener has suspected all along: this man has been lying to himself for years. The audiobook’s short runtime is its strength; there’s no room for filler, and Dostoevsky wastes none. My only minor gripe is the lack of contextual notes—this is a dense story even for Dostoevsky fans, and a brief introduction explaining its place in his early work would’ve been a welcome addition. But that’s a small quibble for such a gripping listen. If you’re the kind of listener who craves stories that burrow into your ribs and won’t let go, this is a must-play.
