About This Audiobook

Julie Anne Lindsey’s *Eyelet Witness* is a cleverly crafted small-town whodunit where the cozy and the chaotic collide. When Bonnie Balfour steps in to revamp a fledgling soufflé stand for a cash-strapped entrepreneur, she expects glitter glue and good vibes—not a murder investigation. But when the blue-ribbon hen, Thelma, becomes an unexpected witness to foul play, Bonnie’s DIY dreams curdle into something far darker. Lindsey’s prose is crisp and witty, balancing Southern charm with sharp, suspenseful pacing. The mystery unfolds with the precision of a well-baked soufflé—light and airy on the surface, but hiding a molten center of secrets. Amy Melissa Bentley’s narration is the cherry on top, delivering each character with distinct, sassy inflections that elevate the humor and tension. This isn’t just a cozy mystery; it’s a playful romp with teeth, where the real crime might be the town’s collective denial.

What sets this audiobook apart is its knack for turning mundane settings into high-stakes drama. The soufflé stand, the local gossip mill, even the clucking of hens—Lindsey transforms these into clues and red herrings with deft economy. Bentley’s performance breathes life into Bonnie’s dry wit and the eccentric cast, from the snooty pageant moms to the overly earnest detective. The result is an audiobook that’s as fun to listen to as it is to unravel, with a mystery that’s equal parts clever and compulsive.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

As someone who’s burned out on cozy mysteries that rehash the same tropes, *Eyelet Witness* felt like a breath of fresh air. Amy Melissa Bentley’s narration is a standout—her delivery of Bonnie’s sarcastic inner monologue is pitch-perfect, and she nails the balance between humor and suspense. The pacing is tight, with Lindsey’s plot moving at a brisk clip that keeps you guessing without resorting to convoluted twists. The small-town setting is vividly drawn, from the clucking of Thelma the hen to the passive-aggressive bake-off rivalries that feel ripped from real life. That said, I did find the supporting cast a tad underdeveloped. The detective, for instance, teeters between clichéd brooding and outright cartoonishness, which occasionally pulled me out of the story. And while the humor is sharp, some of the one-liners land with the subtlety of a dropped soufflé—funny, but a bit heavy-handed. Yet these are minor quibbles in an otherwise engaging listen. By the final act, I was fully invested in Bonnie’s quest for answers, and Bentley’s performance made me feel like I was right there in the kitchen, stirring up trouble alongside her. If you’re craving a mystery that’s smart, snappy, and just a little bit messy, this one’s a winner.
