Newman writes dialogue that *snaps*, especially in arguments where every word feels like a survival tactic. The Virtual Voice narration won’t win any awards for emotional range, but its flat, almost robotic delivery paradoxically amplifies the tension—like listening to a dispatch from the edge of collapse. The story’s strength lies in its *specificity*. When the Karrs raid a pharmacy for antibiotics, the scene lingers on the moral weight of taking from a dying world, not just the loot. The pacing stumbles slightly in the middle during a prolonged bartering sequence that drags, and the Virtual Voice occasionally mispronounces brand names (a jarring reminder you’re not listening to a human), but these are minor quibbles.
