The audiobook’s Virtual Voice narrator takes some getting used to; the slightly robotic cadence initially feels at odds with the raw subject matter, but it grows on you, creating this eerie contrast between the protagonist’s spiraling thoughts and the narrator’s almost *too* composed delivery. It’s like listening to a case file read by someone who’s seen too much—unnerving in the best way. The pacing is where this shines. McCarthy avoids the bloated subplots that bog down so many thrillers, instead tightening the screws on a central mystery that hinges on betrayal and misplaced trust. That said, the ending—while thematically satisfying—feels a touch rushed, as if the final confrontation needed one more beat to land with the weight it deserved.
