I went into *Forest of Regrets* expecting a standard procedural with a few twists thrown in for flair. Lila Voss, the forensic psychologist narrator, is a standout: her detachment isn’t just professional; it’s a coping mechanism, and Gable writes it with such subtlety that you realize halfway through how much you’ve absorbed her perspective. The pacing, however, is a double-edged sword. Virtual Voice’s narration glides over the story’s emotional undercurrents with eerie efficiency, which is brilliant for the first half—you’re lulled into a false sense of security before the rug is pulled out. But by the final act, that same detachment left me craving more visceral payoff; the resolution feels more cerebral than cathartic. That said, the audiobook’s biggest strength is also its most divisive. The synthetic voice works *because* it refuses to emote, making the moments that *do* hit feel surgical. The production is crisp, with no distracting artifacts, and the chapter breaks are timed to let the dread breathe. If you’re here for a thriller that lingers in your bones like a bad dream, this’ll haunt you. If you need your mysteries wrapped in neat bows with clear heroes and villains, look elsewhere.
