I’ll be honest: *Futures Grave* pissed me off in the best way possible. Callum takes the LitRPG framework and twists it into something far more interesting—a story where the ‘game’ isn’t just hard, it’s *malicious*. The Burgon Beast’s defeat? Irrelevant. The rewards? Hollow. The protagonist, Kael, isn’t some chosen one; he’s a guy who’s starting to suspect the universe itself is gaslighting him. And Proczko’s narration sells that paranoia perfectly. His Kael isn’t a grizzled hero—he’s a man teetering on the edge of a breakdown, and you can hear the exhaustion in every sarcastic quip, every half-suppressed scream. The pacing is where things get divisive. The first third is a slow, creeping dread, laying the groundwork for the system’s betrayal. Then—*whiplash*—Callum hits you with a series of revelations that recontextualize everything, and the back half becomes a sprint through a minefield of bad options. Proczko matches this shift, his delivery growing more frantic as Kael’s world unravels. My two critiques: First, the side characters sometimes blur together in the audio format; a few more distinct vocal tags would’ve helped. Second, the magic system’s rules are deliberately vague, which works thematically but can be frustrating if you’re a stickler for hard mechanics. That said, the ambiguity *is* the point—this isn’t a world that rewards understanding. It’s a world that punishes you for trying. Bottom line? If you’re tired of LitRPG where the hero’s journey is a straight line upward, *Futures Grave* is the antidote. It’s ugly, it’s unfair, and it’s utterly compelling. Proczko’s performance ensures you won’t look away, even when you want to.
