Gates of Hell

James Patrick Cronin turns Wash Williams into a character you’d happily follow into battle—or a bar fight. His narration has this effortless grit, balancing Wash’s dry humor with the kind of breathless panic that makes you lean in closer to the headphones. The pacing is tight, never lingering too long on exposition or meandering into filler. Cronin’s voice has a physicality to it, too—you can practically hear the sweat on Wash’s brow during the crunch moments. That said, there were a few instances where I wished the sound mix leaned harder into the tension; some of the quieter scenes in the alien ship felt a touch muffled, like they were happening at the wrong end of a tunnel. Still, it’s a minor gripe in an otherwise stellar performance. Partlow’s world-building is where this shines hardest. The aliens aren’t just a plot device; they’re a force of nature, inscrutable and indifferent, which ratchets up the dread in a way most first-contact stories avoid. Wash’s military background gives the story a grounded edge, but Partlow wisely avoids turning this into a generic military sci-fi romp. The real kicker? The ending. It’s messy, morally gray, and entirely satisfying—a far cry from the tidy resolutions you’d expect in this genre. If you want a sci-fi audiobook that treats first contact like a disaster movie rather than a philosophical debate, this delivers in spades. Just don’t expect a hero’s journey—Wash survives, but he’s worse for the wear.
