About This Audiobook

*Smuggler’s Bounty* isn’t just another military sci-fi romp—it’s a punch to the gut wrapped in a space opera. Rick Partlow drops us into the life of Jack Bennet, a man who saved his world only to lose himself in the aftermath. This isn’t your typical hero’s redemption arc; it’s a raw, unflinching look at what happens when the cost of victory is too high, and the only way forward is through smuggling, booze, and bad decisions. The worldbuilding is lean but razor-sharp, with just enough tech and politics to ground the action without drowning in exposition.

Ryan Kennard Burke’s narration is the secret weapon here. His voice carries the weight of a man who’s seen too much—gruff when Jack’s biting sarcasm cuts through, tense during the fire fights, and quietly devastating in the moments when the protagonist’s self-loathing bleeds through. The audio production leans into the grit: no over-the-top sound effects, just Burke’s performance and the occasional stark silence that makes you lean in closer. If you like your sci-fi with moral ambiguity and a narrator who sounds like he’s one bad day away from snapping, this is your fix.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll be honest: I went into *Smuggler’s Bounty* expecting a by-the-numbers military sci-fi thriller, but what I got was something messier and more compelling. Jack Bennet is the kind of protagonist who makes terrible choices for understandable reasons, and Partlow doesn’t let him (or the listener) off the hook. The first act drags just a touch—Jack’s spiral into self-destruction is necessary, but there are moments where the pacing feels like it’s wallowing. That said, once the plot kicks into gear with the new threat, the book becomes a white-knuckle ride. The action sequences are visceral, especially in audio, where Burke’s delivery turns laser fire and hand-to-hand combat into something you *feel* more than just hear. Burke’s narration is a masterclass in tonal control. He doesn’t do a dozen voices for side characters, but he doesn’t need to—his Jack is so distinct, so layered with exhaustion and dark humor, that everyone else orbits around him naturally. My only critique? A few of the female characters’ voices veer into slightly cartoonish territory, which clashes with the otherwise grounded performance. Still, the production quality is impeccable: no distracting edits, no volume spikes, just a clean, immersive listen. If you’re tired of squeaky-clean space heroes and want a story where the stakes are personal and the hero is his own worst enemy, this is worth your time. Just don’t expect a neat resolution—Partlow leaves enough jagged edges to make you hungry for the next book.
