I’ll admit, I picked up *Grablichter* skeptical of yet another ‘detective with a dark past’ trope, but Almstädt subverted my expectations within the first hour. Pia Korittki isn’t just haunted—she’s *exhausted*, and Anne Moll’s performance sells that bone-deep fatigue without ever slipping into melodrama. Her voice is gravelly in the right places, almost brittle when Pia’s temper flares, but it’s the way she underplays the detective’s vulnerability that really got me. Take the scene where Pia examines the rider’s crushed helmet: Moll’s pause before describing the ‘wet, dark stain’ on the brim is so loaded with dread, I actually rewound to hear it again. The plot’s pacing is deliberate, bordering on slow—this isn’t a thriller that races toward a twist, but a simmering procedural where every interview, every trampled patch of mud, feels purposeful. That said, the subplot involving the headless skeleton occasionally drags, and I wished Almstädt had tied it more tightly to the main mystery sooner. The production is flawless (no jarring edits or volume spikes), but the real star is the sound design’s subtlety: the distant whinny of a horse, the crunch of frost underfoot—small touches that make the setting visceral. My only real critique? The ending, while satisfying, leans a bit too hard on ambiguity for my taste. Still, if you’re after a mystery that values mood over mayhem and a narrator who can break your heart with a sigh, this is a standout. Just maybe don’t listen while riding alone at dusk.
