Hateful Things

I’ll admit, I was skeptical going into *Hateful Things*. Goodkind’s work can be polarizing—some call it dense, others deft—but Skelley’s narration won me over before the first chapter ended. His performance is a marvel: he nails Richard’s simmering rage, Kahlan’s brittle composure, and even the smallest side characters’ voices feel distinct and lived-in. The production quality is top-tier, with crystal-clear audio that makes every whispered threat or desperate scream feel intimate, like you’re standing right there in the room with them. That said, the story’s pacing is a double-edged sword. Goodkind doesn’t waste time on warm-ups; the conflict kicks in hard and fast, which is great for momentum but occasionally leaves key relationships underdeveloped. I found myself wishing for a beat to breathe between the fury and the fallout. The novella’s length also works against it in spots—certain revelations feel crammed in, leaving the emotional weight diluted. Still, the payoff is worth it. The twist involving the Sisters of the Dark is executed with such bold, unapologetic cruelty that it lingers long after the credits roll. If you’re after a fantasy that punches above its weight in moral complexity and narrative ruthlessness, this is a standout. Just don’t expect a light listen.
