About This Audiobook

Seren, the World-Strider queen, has spent centuries safeguarding her fey and human lands with ruthless efficiency. But when her mortal lover’s soul is summoned to Heaven before his time, she’s forced to navigate divine bureaucracy, political intrigue, and literal celestial gatekeeping to bring him back. Amy Sumida’s Heaven Can’t Wait isn’t just another paranormal romance—it’s a sharp, subversive take on afterlife tropes, where Heaven is less a paradise and more a dysfunctional corporate office with harps. The fey politics are deliciously tangled, the stakes feel personal, and the humor lands with the precision of a well-aimed arrow. If you’ve ever wanted a queen who rules with both steel and snark, this is your audiobook.

The narration by Virtual Voice is a standout, giving each character a distinct, almost musical cadence that makes the celestial bureaucrats sound like they’re stuck in a celestial DMV. The pacing is relentless, balancing high-stakes battles with intimate emotional beats—never lingering too long on the sappiness or rushing past the clever twists. This isn’t a slow-burn romance; it’s a sprint with detours into divine absurdity, and the audiobook handles it with aplomb. For fans of witty, genre-blending romances where the otherworldly feels eerily familiar, Heaven Can’t Wait delivers a fresh twist on the old ‘love conquers all’ trope.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into Heaven Can’t Wait expecting a standard paranormal romance, so I was pleasantly shocked by how much it subverted expectations. Seren isn’t just a queen—she’s a bureaucratic nightmare for Heaven, wielding fey magic and sheer stubbornness like a divine Darth Vader. The way she weaponizes celestial red tape is both hilarious and surprisingly satisfying, especially when she turns Heaven’s own rules against them. That said, the romance does feel a bit rushed in places, almost as if the emotional payoff is being sprinted through to get to the next divine slapstick scene. Virtual Voice’s narration is a mixed bag. On one hand, the vocal range is impressive—each character, from the archangels to the minor fey courtiers, has a distinct tone that makes the cast feel alive. On the other, the delivery occasionally leans too hard into the snark, making some of the more tender moments feel like they’re being undercut. The production is clean, though, with no noticeable audio glitches, which is impressive for a virtual narrator. If you’re a fan of romances that prioritize wit over whimsy, this audiobook is a home run—but if you’re looking for something more tender or slow-paced, you might want to look elsewhere.
