The chemistry with the heroine isn’t instant; it’s a slow, simmering rebellion, and that’s what makes it so satisfying. But be warned: Bard doesn’t coddle her characters. There are moments of brutal honesty that will leave you wincing, and a subplot involving betrayal that’s so sharply written, it hurts. Virtual Voice’s narration was a gamble that paid off. While I’ve rolled my eyes at AI narrators before, this one surprised me with its emotional range. The voice actor nails Alastar’s gruff resolve and the heroine’s fiery spirit without resorting to caricature, and the pacing keeps the story moving at a brisk clip. That said, the production team’s insistence on hyper-clear diction occasionally clashes with the grittier dialogue, making some exchanges sound overly rehearsed. Still, if you’re looking for a historical romance with teeth—and a narrator who can sell the emotional heft—this audiobook is a solid pick.
