James Lailey’s performance shines through in Hollow Grave, giving depth and nuance to the characters without overdoing it. The narrative takes a thrilling turn as Detective Inspector Lockyer and Detective Constable Gemma Broad uncover a decades-old mystery. However, there are moments where the pacing slows down slightly, particularly during some of the more detailed historical contexts. Nonetheless, these brief pauses do little to detract from the overall experience. Fans of Ann Cleeves will find much to admire here, but this audiobook stands as its own unique masterpiece, perfect for those who enjoy a blend of historical and modern crime thrillers.
