The audiobook’s structure—flipping between J’s childhood at the school and an adult survivor’s retrospective—could feel jarring, but the narrators sell it. Fuller’s performance as young J is *exceptional*; he nails the breathless panic of a kid realizing his ‘father’ might be a fraud, especially in scenes where he whispers to his only confidant, a girl named K. Bouvard, meanwhile, delivers the adult sections with a chilling detachment, like a coroner recounting a disaster he survived but doesn’t fully understand. That said, the pacing *will* frustrate some listeners. The first third is deliberate to a fault, dwelling on the school’s routines (endless art drills, cryptic lessons) without clear stakes. And while the payoff is worth it—a third-act reveal that recontextualizes *everything*—the path there demands patience. The sound design is minimal but effective: subtle echoes in the school’s halls, the scrape of charcoal on paper during art "inspections," all reinforcing the claustrophobia. My one critique? The female characters (like K and the teacher *MOM*) feel underdeveloped, their arcs serving mostly as mirrors for J’s turmoil. Still, the ending lingers like a bruise. If you love audiobooks that *immerse* you in dread—not through jump scares, but through the creeping realization that the rules you trusted were always lies—this is a masterclass.
