I’ll be honest: I went into *Into the Void* expecting another by-the-numbers demon hunter yarn, but Herzog’s knack for *place* won me over. The story’s strength isn’t in its mythology (which, while serviceable, doesn’t break new ground) but in how it *feels*—like a sun-bleached police procedural that took a wrong turn into a back-alley séance. Patrick Bannon is a compelling mess: a lapsed Catholic with a death wish, a man who treats his supernatural “gift” like a STD he can’t shake. His voice—both Herzog’s writing and the Virtual Voice’s performance—carries the weight of a guy who’s seen too much and still can’t look away. That said, the narration’s lack of emotional range sometimes undercuts the tension. A human narrator might’ve sold the terror better; here, the flat delivery occasionally makes demonic possession sound like a DMV announcement. The pacing is where this audiobook shines and stumbles. The first half is a masterclass in slow-burn dread, with Herzog letting the weirdness seep in like a high tide. But the final act rushes its climax, trading psychological horror for a more conventional action showdown that feels tonally mismatched. Still, the production is clean—no distracting audio glitches—and the Florida setting is so vivid you’ll swear you can smell the salt and sulfur. If you’re craving a supernatural thriller with teeth (and a side of existential exhaustion), this is worth the listen. Just don’t expect polish—expect *grit*, and a protagonist who’s as likely to get you killed as save your soul.
