Scott Aiello’s narration is the secret weapon here. He doesn’t just *read* the combat; he *fights* it, his voice straining during fireteam ambushes, dropping to a guttural growl for the AO’s chilling taunts. The production’s mix is crisp, with weapon effects and distant screams layered just enough to immerse without overwhelming. That said, the middle act drags slightly with tactical debates that feel more like tabletop RPG exposition than organic strategy. And while the body horror of the AO is visceral, some character deaths land unevenly—Anderle rushes past a few that deserved more weight. But the finale? Worth the stumbles. When the students realize their "game" skills are useless against an enemy that *adapts*, Aiello’s delivery turns icy, and the last hour plays like a horror movie. This isn’t a book for fans of cozy progression fantasies. It’s for listeners who want their sci-fi with teeth, where victory isn’t guaranteed and the cost is measured in blood, not XP.
