The production itself is clean, with subtle ambient touches that ground listeners in the era without overpowering the story. That said, Tremlett’s biography isn’t without flaws. At 19 hours, it occasionally meanders into granular details about medieval Castilian bureaucracy that feel indulgent rather than essential. And while Isabella’s political acumen is rightly celebrated, her personal life—her marriage to Ferdinand, her relationships with her children—sometimes gets buried under statecraft. Still, I finished this thinking Isabella wasn’t just a queen but a force of nature. Gijón’s performance and Tremlett’s unflinching gaze make her impossible to ignore.
