About This Audiobook

Just Deserts strips identity down to its raw, jittery core. L.J. Greatrex doesn’t just write a thriller—she engineers a psychological pressure cooker. William Forester, alias Bill Pascal, isn’t just hiding from enemies; he’s erasing himself from the inside out, one tiny compromise at a time. The prose is surgical, the tension is relentless, and the dread isn’t just in what happens next—it’s in the quiet spaces between sentences where Forester’s unraveling feels inevitable. This isn’t a cat-and-mouse chase; it’s a cat being slowly buried alive by its own caution. Greatrex’s brilliance lies in making invisibility the most terrifying choice of all, a slow-motion surrender where every decision is a potential undoing. If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to become a ghost before you’re even gone, this is your audiobook.

Narrator Angus Freathy doesn’t just carry the story—he hauls it over the finish line with a voice that’s equal parts weary and razor-sharp. Freathy nails the brittleness of a man who’s spent too long listening for footsteps in empty hallways, his delivery shifting seamlessly from clipped urgency to hollowed-out resignation. The audiobook’s pacing is a masterclass in restraint, letting silences scream louder than dialogue. Production-wise, it’s crisp as a fresh snowfall, no muffled footsteps or tinny phone calls—just the cold clarity of a man drowning in his own precautions. If you crave thrillers that burrow under your skin instead of exploding over it, this is your next obsession.

Editor's Review

AudioBook Atlas

I’ve listened to my fair share of psychological thrillers where the protagonist’s unraveling is the real plot, but Just Deserts carves out its own territory by making the unraveling the punishment. Angus Freathy’s narration is the glue holding this fragile house of cards together—his voice has the texture of a man who’s forgotten how to laugh, and he sells every paranoid twitch with surgical precision. What makes this story stick isn’t just the premise (a man hiding from a past he thought he’d buried) but the way Greatrex drags his protagonist—and the listener—through the muck of his own cowardice. The first-person perspective is a double-edged sword: it immerses you in Forester’s paranoia, but it also forces you to sit with his choices long after you’d want to walk away. That said, the audiobook isn’t without its rough edges. Freathy’s delivery sometimes veers into overexposition territory, particularly during the early expository chapters where he feels compelled to color in every shadow before the plot’s even begun. And while the slow-burn tension is the star, the payoff—when it arrives—lands with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Still, if you’re here for a thriller that lingers like a bruise, this one’s a knockout. The final act left me emotionally exhausted in the best way, like I’d just survived a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek where the seeker was always me.
