About This Audiobook

Cebelius delivers a high-octane superhero romp that ditches the polished capes-and-tights formula in favor of something more raw and unpredictable. Set against the stark backdrop of the Dakotas, this isn’t your usual metropolis fantasy—it’s a story where the heroes are as likely to be small-time hustlers or washed-up vigilantes as they are to be cosmic-powered saviors. The world feels lived-in, the stakes feel personal, and the humor lands with the kind of sharp, self-aware wit that keeps the tone from ever feeling self-serious. Cebelius weaves action and character work into a tight, propulsive narrative that never lingers too long on exposition, making it a breeze to sink into.

Narrators Daniel Wisniewski and Rebecca Woods bring distinct textures to the cast, with Wisniewski’s gravelly, no-nonsense cadence perfect for the story’s antiheroes and Woods’ crisp, dynamic delivery lending gravitas to the more idealistic figures. Their chemistry crackles in dialogue-heavy scenes, and the production ensures that even the most chaotic sequences stay crystal clear. It’s a pairing that elevates the material beyond a typical audiobook experience, turning what could’ve been another forgettable power fantasy into something with real personality.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I was skeptical of a superhero story that trades spandex for denim jackets and problem-solving for problem-creating, but Cebelius sold me on the charm of its ragtag cast. Wisniewski’s narration sells the book’s off-kilter tone immediately—his voice has the kind of weary, can-do attitude that makes even the most absurd situations feel grounded. Rebecca Woods, meanwhile, steals scenes as the mercenary-with-a-conscience, her delivery oscillating between icy professionalism and sudden, unexpected warmth. The production is top-tier, with fight scenes that hit like a punch to the gut and quieter moments that linger just long enough to feel earned. That said, the middle act drags a bit, stretching what should’ve been a tighter third act into something that feels over-reliant on subplots. And while I appreciate the attempt at moral ambiguity, some of the villains verge on cartoonishly evil, which occasionally undercuts the otherwise grounded tone. Still, the audiobook’s strengths far outweigh its stumbles. If you’re craving a superhero tale that’s less about saving the world and more about surviving it, this one’s a sleeper hit with teeth.
