There’s a scene midway through where Rosa dissects a crime scene photo in real-time, and his delivery turns the description into something almost *physical*—you can hear the effort it takes her to stay detached, the way his voice tightens like a wire about to snap. It’s a rare audiobook where the performance doesn’t just complement the text but *expands* it. That said, the pacing stumbles in the second act. Mróz’s meticulous setup—rosa’s return to Poland, the bureaucratic hurdles, the slow reveal of the killer’s ‘kabalistic’ signatures—feels deliberate to a fault. Some listeners might chafe at the 20-minute stretches of procedural minutiae (a subplot about inter-agency politics could’ve been trimmed). And while the ending lands with a gut-punch, the final confrontation hinges on a reveal that’s telegraphed a bit too heavily. Still, the audio production is flawless: Jarociński’s breath control during tense scenes, the way background noise fades in during flashbacks—it’s clear this was recorded with the precision of Rosa’s own case files. For fans of *The Snowman*’s atmosphere or *Mindhunter*’s psychological depth, but with a distinctly Central European flavor (and a narrator who makes even a grocery list sound ominous), this is a standout.
