I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at first when I saw *another* ‘alien protector’ romance, but *Kyris* won me over by being brutally efficient with its storytelling. There’s no meandering worldbuilding or overly flowery internal monologues—just two people (well, one human and one very large, very grumpy alien) trying not to die in a landscape that wants them dead. B.N. Love’s narration sells it: his Kyris sounds like he’s been chewing on rocks for a decade, but there’s a hesitant warmth when he interacts with the human that keeps the character from feeling like a stereotype. The human’s voice, in contrast, is lighter but edged with exhaustion, which makes their dynamic feel grounded. That said, the middle act drags slightly—there’s only so many ways to describe thirst and sand before even the most atmospheric prose starts to blend together. And while the slow-burn tension works, I wished for a few more moments of levity to break up the grimness. Still, the payoff is worth it: the romance here isn’t about instant attraction but about two people who *hate* needing each other until they don’t. The production is clean, with no distracting audio quirks, and the sound design (subtle wind effects, distant growls) enhances the immersion without overpowering. If you’re tired of alien romances that feel like they’re set in a glittery spa, this one’s got teeth.
