The structure—flitting between Vienna’s gilded 1910s, a 1990s Italian heist, and the cold calculus of the art market—should feel disjointed, but Buscatto’s narration stitches it together with eerie cohesion. His delivery is almost *too* controlled at first, his cadence so measured that I worried the audiobook might drag. Then the theft happens, and suddenly that restraint becomes a weapon: the way he clips certain phrases (‘*retouché par le maître*’) makes the retouching of the painting sound like a violation, not an artistic act. The real triumph here is how de Peretti turns the *absence* of the painting into a character. We never see the full *Portrait of a Lady*, just glimpses through letters, auction catalogs, and thieves’ boasts—and that’s the point. The audiobook’s production leans into this with subtle audio cues: a faint echo in gallery scenes, the rustle of paper during archival digressions. My only gripe? The female characters often feel like sketches compared to the meticulously rendered male collectors and criminals. And while the ending lands with emotional weight, it’s so deliberately ambiguous that some listeners might crave more closure. Still, this is a rare beast: a literary thriller that’s as intellectually satisfying as it is viscerally gripping. If you’ve ever stood in a museum wondering who *really* owns the art—or the stories behind it—this will haunt you long after the last chapter.
