Rouge karma

I approached *Rouge Karma* expecting a historical thriller with a French twist, but Grangé delivers something far more audacious: a novel that’s equal parts coming-of-age reckoning and existential thriller, wrapped in the suffocating heat of a city on the brink. Mathieu Buscatto’s narration was the first surprise—his voice has this effortless authority, shifting between the trio’s perspectives with such seamless transitions that I occasionally forgot I was listening instead of reading. Hervé’s slow descent into obsession, Jean-Louis’s quiet moral unraveling, and Nicole’s fierce, flawed resilience are all rendered with a nuance that feels almost cinematic. The pacing is relentless, but it’s the kind of relentlessness that rewards attention, not exhaustion. That said, the middle act drags in places, particularly during some of the historical digressions that feel shoehorned in. And while Buscatto’s performance is stellar, his attempt at a gritty, working-class accent for one character occasionally veers into caricature. But these are minor quibbles for a story that’s as unpredictable as it is unforgettable. By the final chapter, I was left breathless, questioning whether these characters were victims of fate or its most enthusiastic architects—a testament to Grangé’s ability to leave you questioning reality long after the last word fades.
