This isn’t a brooding, monotone killer; Allwright gives her a voice that’s equal parts velvet and venom, especially in the scenes where Celaena’s masking her fear with sarcasm. The production quality is crisp, with no awkward pauses or volume spikes, letting the story’s pacing—which oscillates between breakneck action and slow-burn intrigue—shine. That said, this isn’t a perfect listen. The romance subplot (yes, even in Book 1) occasionally feels *too* polished, like Maas is setting up dominoes for future books rather than letting tensions simmer naturally. And while Allwright nails Celaena’s voice, some male characters blur together in tone, lacking distinct cadences. But these are quibbles. The real triumph here is how the audiobook turns Celaena’s internal monologues—her arrogance, her vulnerability—into something *visceral*. When she’s plotting a kill or trading barbs with rivals, you’ll catch yourself leaning in, as if you’re her accomplice. If you love antiheroes with bite and narrators who can make a death threat sound like a love letter, this is your next obsession.
