I dove into 'Lady's Knight' expecting a fresh take on historical fiction, and what I got was far more: a hilarious, feminist romp that feels both timeless and urgent. Narrators Barbara Rosenblat and Helen Keeley form a dynamic duo, tackling the book's dual perspectives with remarkable skill. Rosenblat brings a grounded, sometimes rough-around-the-edges quality to the male characters, contrasting nicely with Helen Keeley's effortlessly charismatic portrayal of the determined female lead, embodying both the fierce warrior and tender romantic sides. The story itself is clever, blending bits of sci-fi tech seamlessly into the medieval backdrop, and Kaufman's writing has a cracking pace that hooks you immediately. The characters are relatable and the queer representation feels authentic and celebratory. My only small critique is that a few secondary characters felt slightly underdeveloped, and the plot occasionally plods through slower moments of political intrigue. However, the fantastic narration and Kaufman's knack for blending adventure with sharp social commentary make this a standout listen.
