I went into Lost Souls expecting another saccharine animal rescue tale, but Duffy delivered something far more powerful: a mirror held up to our own capacity for cruelty *and* redemption. Libatique’s narration is the secret weapon here. Her voice crackles with exhaustion in the early chapters, as Duffy recounts the horrors of hoarding cases and puppy mills, but she never leans into melodrama—just a weary, human ache that makes the eventual triumphs feel earned. The standout story is ‘Maddie,’ a skeletal pit bull who couldn’t lift her head from the dirt at intake. Duffy’s description of her first tentative step on fresh grass made me hold my breath. That said, the book stumbles slightly in its structure: the transition between case studies sometimes feels abrupt, like flipping TV channels too fast. And while the production is polished, a few ambient sounds (dogs barking, doors closing) feel slightly overlaid, disrupting the flow. Still, these are minor quibbles. By the final chapter, I was sobbing into my headphones—not because the stories are manipulative, but because they’re *true*.
