The first act’s worldbuilding is Sanderson at his most inventive—imagine a superhero origin story where the heroes are the villains, and the rules of their powers are as arbitrary as they are destructive. But by the second half, the plot starts to buckle under its own ambition. A few too many coincidences strain credibility, and the mid-book lull drags in a way that Montero’s narration can’t fully salvage. Still, the payoff is worth the slog: the finale’s gut-punch moment left me staring at my headphones in stunned silence. Minor flaws aside, this audiobook nails the balance between spectacle and substance.
