I’ll be honest: *Market Forces* is the kind of audiobook that leaves you emotionally winded, and I mean that as a compliment. Richard Morgan’s prose is a sledgehammer—equal parts economic theory and gunmetal poetry—and Simon Vance’s narration is the perfect blade to deliver it. Vance’s performance is *controlled*, almost surgical, which makes the rare moments when his voice cracks with fury or fatigue hit like a gut punch. The opening act, where our protagonist Chris Faulkner navigates a high-speed duel while negotiating a merger, is one of the best audiobook cold opens I’ve heard. The sound design is minimal (no explosions or tire screeches), but Vance’s pacing *is* the action, his voice tightening like a coil before each violent release. That said, this isn’t a book for the squeamish or the morally queasy. Morgan’s world is one where empathy is a liability, and the novel’s satire is so pitch-black it sometimes feels less like commentary and more like a dare. The middle act drags slightly—too many boardroom monologues about ‘market correction’ that, while thematically rich, test the audiobook’s momentum. And Vance’s delivery, while brilliant, can occasionally feel *too* detached; there were moments I wished he’d let the rage bleed through more. But when the finale hits, it’s a masterstroke of ambiguity: a climax that’s both triumphant and hollow, leaving you to wonder if you’ve just spent 15 hours cheering for the villain. If you like your sci-fi with teeth and your protagonists with blood on their hands, this is a must-listen. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.
