This is a book where the gods are either absent or actively malicious, where ‘victory’ often means choosing the least horrible option, and where the protagonist’s greatest skill might be his ability to alienate allies. Ringil Eskiath is a fantastic antihero—not because he’s broodingly tragic, but because he’s *exhausting* in the best way. His internal monologue is a mix of self-loathing and razor-sharp wit, and Vance nails it, delivering lines like ‘*I’ve killed men for less than a sneer*’ with the weight of a man who’s long since stopped counting bodies. The audiobook’s pacing is where it really shines. Morgan’s fight scenes are some of the best in modern fantasy—tactical, chaotic, and *loud*—and Vance’s performance makes them visceral. You’ll flinch at the sound of Ravensfriend biting into bone. That said, the middle act drags slightly with political intrigue that, while necessary, lacks the punch of the character-driven scenes. And if you’re sensitive to grimdark tropes (sexual violence is implied, not graphic, but ever-present), this won’t be your cup of tea. Still, the payoff—a climax that blends cosmic horror with swordplay—is worth the slog.
