Maze Witch

I went into *Maze Witch* expecting a solid fantasy listen, but what I got was a full-blown adrenaline rush. Khristine Hvam’s narration is the secret weapon here—her ability to shift between Pamela’s internal monologues (all sharp wit and gritted teeth) and the external chaos of magic duels is nothing short of masterful. The magic system alone is enough to hook you; Mayer doesn’t just describe spells, she makes them feel like living, breathing forces with weight and consequence. Pamela isn’t a traditional heroine—she’s ruthless when she needs to be, vulnerable when it counts, and always calculating. The tension never lets up, which is both a strength and, at times, a slight drawback. There were moments where the pacing felt *too* relentless, leaving me scrambling to keep up with the whiplash shifts between political intrigue and outright warfare. A few more breaths between major revelations might’ve helped. That said, the worldbuilding is stellar. Mayer doesn’t waste time explaining every detail—she trusts you to sink or swim, and the immersive payoff is worth it. The side characters, especially Pamela’s found family of misfits, add depth and heart to the otherwise cutthroat narrative. Hvam nails their distinct voices too, from the gruff loyalty of a shapeshifter ally to the eerie, singsong menace of a rival witch. If you love fantasy that punches you in the gut but leaves you begging for more, *Maze Witch* is a must-listen. Just be prepared to lose sleep.
