I approached *Mint Choc Chip* expecting a lightweight summer read, but what I got was a tight, twisty little mystery that sneaks up on you like a frozen treat in the dead of winter. Virtual Voice’s narration is a standout—energetic without being exhausting, and deft at shifting between Minty’s earnest sleuthing and the small-town gossip that fuels the drama. The voice work for secondary characters, like Minty’s no-nonsense grandmother or the perpetually flustered Mr. Whippy from the rival truck, adds a layer of texture that makes the world feel lived-in, not just sketched. That said, the ending left me craving just a little more depth. The conflict resolution wraps up neatly, which is great for young listeners, but the lack of lingering consequences or a real ‘what now?’ moment feels like a missed opportunity for emotional resonance. The production quality is top-notch—crisp audio with no distracting background noise—but I did find myself wishing for a bit more ambient sound, like the distant hum of the ocean or the chatter of tourists, to fully immerse me in Mayland-by-the-Sea. Still, these are minor quibbles in what is overall a delightfully punchy listen. Perfect for car rides, bedtime (if your kid isn’t spooked by mild sabotage), or any time you need a palate cleanser that’s more exciting than plain vanilla.
