Mit den Augen der Gaids

I’ll admit, I went into *Mit den Augen der Gaids* expecting another by-the-numbers military sci-fi slog, but Vandemaan subverts that fast. The Gaids aren’t fighting for glory or survival—they’re mercenaries caught in a proxy war for the ‘Frequenz-Monarchie,’ a faction whose motives stay maddeningly vague. That ambiguity is the book’s strength. You’re never quite sure who’s manipulating whom, and the short runtime means the tension never sags. The battle scenes are visceral, but it’s the downtime—where the Gaids debate their next move in clipped, weary dialogue—that sticks with you. Maier’s performance is *excellent*, but not flawless. His pacing in combat sequences is impeccable, each line delivered like a gunshot, but his voice occasionally slips into monotony during expository stretches (thankfully rare). The production is clean, though I wished for more atmospheric sound design—this is a story that *begs* for the hum of engines or the crackle of comms to heighten immersion. Still, for a sub-four-hour listen, it’s a masterclass in efficient worldbuilding. If you love your space opera with grit over grandeur, and narrators who sound like they’ve earned their scars, this is a hidden gem. Just don’t expect easy answers—or happy endings.
