Tom Jacobs’ narration is the secret weapon of *Die Jenzeitigen Lande*, and he wields it like a seasoned pro. When the story pivots to high-stakes revelations, his delivery becomes electric, with just the right mix of urgency and dread. That said, the sheer density of Vandemaan’s worldbuilding occasionally trips him up—long stretches of technical jargon or cryptic dialogue can feel like a marathon without water, especially in the first act. A more aggressive pacing in these sections would’ve helped, but Jacobs’ commitment to the material never wavers. The story itself is a love letter to classic space opera, dripping with the kind of cosmic horror that lingers long after the credits roll. Vandemaan doesn’t waste time on filler; every scene serves a dual purpose—either advancing the plot or deepening the mystery of the Atopie. The unresolved cliffhanger is a bold choice, and while some might find it frustrating, I appreciated the trust in the audience to connect the dots themselves. My only real critique is the lack of female POVs in a cast that otherwise feels refreshingly diverse in thought, if not gender. Still, the audiobook’s production is flawless, with sound design that immerses you in the void between stars. If you’re a fan of *Perry Rhodan* or the more cerebral end of German sci-fi, this is a must-listen—but be prepared to lean in.
