I’ll admit, I went into *Monster Core* expecting another by-the-numbers dungeon builder, but Dante King’s take is like if *Dungeon Born* and *The Dark Lord’s Blog* had a baby—and then that baby grew up to be a serial killer. Dominic isn’t just *building* a dungeon; he’s *weaponizing* it, and C.J. Mission’s performance sells every ounce of that malice. His voice work is a masterclass in tonal contrast: smooth and almost amused during Dominic’s internal monologues, then dropping into a guttural growl when the avatar takes over. The shift isn’t jarring—it’s *intentional*, reinforcing the duality of a core that’s both calculating and feral. I particularly loved how Mission handles the rival dungeon cores; their voices drip with desperation or arrogance, making each confrontation feel like a high-stakes poker game where the chips are made of bones. That said, the pacing isn’t perfect. The middle act drags slightly during Dominic’s *n*th trap optimization sequence—yes, we get it, spikes are effective, but do we need three chapters of it? And while the lack of a traditional "hero" is refreshing, the adventurers are often so one-dimensionally stupid that their deaths start to feel less satisfying and more… predictable. Still, the audiobook’s production saves it from monotony. The ambient echoes in dungeon scenes and the *crunch* of certain sound effects (used sparingly) add a tactile layer that text alone couldn’t. By the final act, when Dominic’s ambition spirals into something genuinely terrifying, you’ll either be cheering or side-eyeing your speaker in disbelief. Either way, you won’t look at dungeon cores the same again.
