Thorne, in particular, deserves serious praise; his performance is so slick that I forgot I was listening to an audiobook at all. He nails the balance between grit and gallows humor, and his vocal work for the hunters (each with distinct regional accents and personalities) makes the ensemble feel like a real team rather than a collection of archetypes. The stories themselves are a mixed bag, which is both a strength and a frustration. Some entries, like the Tokyo-set “The Good, the Bad, and the Furry,” are tight, high-energy action pieces with clever twists, while others, like the overlong ��Monster Hunter Memoirs: A Little Something Extra,” drag with excessive exposition. The pacing is uneven in places, too—if you’re not hooked by the first 15 minutes of a story, you might zone out. Still, the sheer audacity of the project wins me over. Correia doesn’t just transplant his hunters to new locations; he reimagines how different cultures would respond to the supernatural, blending folklore with modern horror in ways that feel both fresh and respectful. The audiobook’s production is another standout—Thorne’s narration is supplemented by subtle, well-mixed sound effects that enhance immersion without becoming a distraction. My biggest critique? Some of the stories suffer from what I’ll call ‘anthology syndrome’: they’re intriguing on their own but lack the connective tissue that would make the whole feel cohesive. That said, if you’re after a buffet of monster-hunting action with global flair and a narrator who keeps you glued to your headphones, this is a satisfying, if occasionally uneven, feast.
