Levine writes him as a guy who knows he’s an idiot but can’t help himself, and Luke Daniels’ narration sells that self-aware sleaziness perfectly. His Lassiter sounds like a guy who’s been chain-smoking in a dive bar since 1987: gravelly, weary, but still capable of surprising sharpness when he’s cornered. The real standout, though, is how Daniels handles the secondary cast. Gina Florio, the mobster’s wife, isn’t just a femme fatale cliché—her voice carries a mix of vulnerability and steel, and Daniels nails the shift between her seductive purr and her icy rage. The plot’s strongest when it leans into the moral gray zones. The courtroom scenes are tight, but the real drama unfolds in the quiet moments—Lassiter’s internal monologues, the tense silences between him and Gina, the way the mob’s presence looms like a thundercloud. My only gripe? The middle act drags slightly with a subplot involving a minor character that feels like filler. And while Daniels’ mobster voices are fantastic, one or two sound *just* similar enough to cause brief confusion during rapid-fire dialogue. Still, the payoff is worth it: a finale that’s less about neat resolutions and more about how far people will go to protect (or betray) the ones they love.
