About This Audiobook

Mr Fortune’s Practice isn’t your typical Golden Age mystery—it’s sharper, stranger, and steeped in the cold clarity of medical science. Reginald Fortune, a physician with a surgeon’s precision and a detective’s intuition, steps into crime scenes where anatomy holds the answers and silence speaks louder than confessions. These seven tightly wound cases hinge on toxicology, surgical insight, and the quiet absurdities of human behavior, turning autopsies into revelations and bedside manner into psychological warfare. It’s Christie meets Conan Doyle with a scalpel—less drawing-room speculation, more forensic instinct. Graham Scott’s narration elevates the material with a dry, understated delivery that mirrors Fortune’s detached brilliance. He doesn’t perform—he observes, just as Fortune does, letting the clinical details land with quiet impact. The production is crisp and unobtrusive, allowing Bailey’s lean prose and macabre wit to shine. This isn’t a flashy thriller; it’s a masterclass in restrained suspense, where the truth is often hidden in a bloodstain or a misplaced pill. Ideal for listeners who appreciate intellectual puzzles grounded in realism, not theatrics.

AudioBook Atlas

I went into Mr Fortune’s Practice expecting another quaint relic from the Golden Age—and was immediately disarmed by its icy intelligence and dark humor. Graham Scott’s narration is perfectly calibrated: he never oversells the drama, which is exactly right for a series where the hero solves murders by noticing a patient’s pulse or a chemical residue. His voice—calm, posh, slightly sardonic—makes Fortune feel less like a detective and more like a quietly amused pathologist who just happens to solve crimes on the side. The stories themselves are lean and cunning, each one a puzzle box with a clinical twist. I particularly loved 'The Case of the Green Water,' where a poisoned aquarium reveals more than a corpse ever could. That said, the pacing can feel abrupt; some transitions between dialogue and deduction are jarringly fast, and a few endings wrap up too neatly. Also, the gender dynamics are very much of their time—don’t expect progressive characterizations. Still, that’s part of the vintage charm. What sets this audiobook apart is its authenticity: the medical details feel real, the stakes feel quiet but lethal, and Scott never panders to modern thriller tropes. It’s a refreshing listen for those tired of breathless narration and overblown scores.
