About This Audiobook

A body in the Thames isn’t the usual fare for *Cozy Mystery* territory, and that’s precisely why Neil Richards’ *Murder on Thames* works so well. Set in the sleepy Cotswolds hamlet of Cherringham—where everyone knows your name but no one’s in a hurry to spill secrets—the story upends expectations the moment a local woman is fished from the river. What follows is a tightly plotted whodunit that trades in stifling sherry parties for gritty riverside investigations, all while keeping the charm of a classic cosy intact. The writing balances wit with genuine suspense, avoiding the saccharine pitfalls of the genre without sacrificing its comforting rhythms. It’s a rare mystery that respects your intelligence while still leaving you eager for the next cup of tea and scone break."

"The audiobook’s real star is narrator Neil Dudgeon, whose effortless command of the material transforms Richards’ script into a living, breathing scene. His delivery of Jack Brennan—a former New York cop turned boatyard owner—channels the weary pragmatism of a man who’s seen too much but still cares too much to walk away. Dudgeon’s portrayal of the town’s eccentrics is equally sharp, whether it’s a gossipy vicar or a retired detective with more theories than facts. The pacing is brisk but never rushed, and the production’s clean audio ensures every whispered clue and splash in the dark feels intimate. If you’ve ever wanted a mystery that scratches the itch of classic cosies without the cloying sweetness, this is your antidote.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *Murder on Thames* expecting the usual quaint villages and mild-mannered sleuths, so the opening scene—a body pulled from the river with no clear ties to Cherringham—immediately hooked me. The story walks a tightrope between keeping the cozy vibe and delivering real stakes, and for the most part, it succeeds. Jack Brennan’s investigations are methodical but not plodding, and his partnership with series regular Sarah Edwards crackles with the kind of banter that feels earned, not forced. The mystery unfolds with satisfying twists, though I’ll admit I guessed one key reveal early on—something about the victim’s ex-husband rang too many alarm bells too soon. Dudgeon’s narration is the real standout, though. His voice for Jack is that rare blend of gruff and gentle, the kind of tone that makes you forget you’re listening to an audiobook and not eavesdropping on a real conversation. His female characters, however, sometimes veer into caricature—particularly one over-the-top gossipy neighbor whose lines feel like they were lifted from a 1950s farce. The production is otherwise top-notch, with no audible distractions to pull you out of the story. At under three hours, it’s the perfect length for a commute or a lazy Sunday afternoon, though purists might find the resolution a tad too neat. Still, for a mystery that’s as entertaining as it is comforting, this one delivers.
