This isn’t a hero’s journey—it’s a survival slog where Murphy’s 1990s tactical instincts are both his greatest asset and his biggest liability. The first act’s slow burn (seriously, the worldbuilding is *dense*) had me checking the time stamps, but once the dominoes start falling—alien mercenaries, corporate espionage, a binary star system on the brink—it’s impossible to look away. Pariseau’s performance sells it; his Murphy growls like a drill sergeant but falters like a man out of his depth, and his voice for the alien *Slaasriithi* is eerie enough to make your skin prickle. That said, this isn’t a flawless listen. The middle act drags under the weight of its own lore—Gannon loves his acronyms and faction names, and even Pariseau’s crisp delivery can’t always mask the exposition dumps. And while Murphy’s fish-out-of-water moments are gold (his reaction to 22nd-century gender norms is *chef’s kiss*), some supporting characters blur together in the audio format. But the finale? Worth every minute. When the twists land, they *land*, and the last hour had me white-knuckling my headphones.
