I’ll be honest: I went into *Neural Wraith 3* expecting more of the same—cool tech, slick action, the usual cyberpunk trappings. Instead, Robertson delivered a story that *hurts* in the best way. The mass murder mystery is just the hook; the real horror is in how casually the city’s elite manipulate memory and identity. There’s a scene midway through where a character ‘recalls’ a conversation that never happened, and Savannah’s delivery—half confusion, half dawning terror—gave me chills. She’s especially brilliant with the AI characters, giving them an eerie, *almost* human cadence that makes their manipulations even more unsettling. That said, this isn’t a perfect listen. The first act drags slightly as Robertson sets up the dominoes, and there’s a subplot involving a rogue faction of ‘purist’ hackers that feels undercooked compared to the main thread. Also, while Savannah’s voice work is stellar, her male characters occasionally blur together in tone, which can be confusing during rapid-fire dialogue. But these are quibbles. The final act is a masterclass in tension, with a twist that reframes everything you thought you knew about the series’ first two books. If you love cyberpunk that’s as cerebral as it is visceral—and narration that *demands* you pay attention—this is your next obsession.
