Never Blame the Gardener

My curiosity was piqued from the very first sentence of 'Never Blame the Gardener'. I found myself immediately drawn into the small-town setting and the promise of a mystery that, on the surface, seemed like the perfect cozy read. Alex Wagner crafts a warm and inviting atmosphere, even as the undercurrent of suspicion beneath the surface begins to form. The town feels like a character itself, with its history and secrets lurking just beyond the edge of awareness. I loved the feeling of community and the everyday details that make the world feel real and lived-in. Narrator Rudy Sanda is phenomenal. His voice has a rich, warm quality that perfectly suits the narrative's tone, sounding like a gentle guide telling the story. He infuses the characters with personality and makes their emotions palpable. The suspense builds organically, though with the usual clever misdirection typical of the genre. However, while the plotting was intricate, I felt the pacing occasionally stumbled slightly just before the reveal in one chapter, creating a brief moment where the tension genuinely flagged slightly rather than offering the continuous edge-of-your-seat quality I was hoping for. Overall, it's a very compelling listen, beautifully narrated, and a satisfying entry into the cozy mystery vein.
