When the duke issues a command, there’s no velvety growl to soften the blow; it’s a flat, inexorable statement, like a guillotine blade catching the light. That coldness makes the rare moments of emotional crack—like Amanda’s voice breaking on a confession—land like gunshots. Bellamy’s dialogue is already razor-edged, but the narration turns it into a weapon. The story itself is a delicious slow burn, though ‘slow’ might be the wrong word—it’s more like watching two scorpions circle in a bottle. The first half leans heavily into Amanda’s defiance, and while her antics are darkly funny (the scene where she ‘accidentally’ ruins a state dinner had me cackling), I did occasionally crave more interiority. The duke remains a cipher for longer than I’d like, his motivations dolled out in stingy drips. That said, the payoff when his facade finally cracks is worth the wait, especially in audio, where the Virtual Voice’s sudden shift in tone is genuinely chilling. My only real critique? The production could’ve used a touch more dynamic range—some scenes blur together in the mid-tone register, and a human narrator might’ve added more textual variety. But that’s a small quibble for an audiobook this bold.
