About This Audiobook

Rodney Riesel’s Ocean Floors isn’t just another Florida Keys mystery—it’s a sun-bleached nightmare where paradise hides rot. Lottery winner turned private eye Dan Coast returns, this time tangling with a murder that drags him into the muck of illegal salvage operations, corrupt officials, and a dead tourist tangled in fishing nets. Riesel’s prose is as sharp as the coral underfoot, blending hardboiled grit with the sticky languor of the tropics, and the audiobook adaptation by Alex Robertson crackles with the kind of energy that makes even a casual listener feel like they’re waist-deep in the investigation. The pacing is relentless, the dialogue snaps, and the setting is so vivid you’ll practically smell the salt on the breeze.

What sets this apart from the usual sun-soaked crime fare is Riesel’s refusal to romanticize the Keys. There’s no postcard charm here—just greed, decay, and the ocean’s cold, indifferent embrace. Robertson’s narration is a masterclass in contrast, switching between Dan’s weary cynicism and the brittle charm of a local informant with effortless precision. The audiobook’s production is crisp, with no muffled dialogue or jarring cuts, and the short runtime keeps the momentum tight without sacrificing depth. If you’re craving a mystery that’s equal parts escapism and unease, this is it.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ve listened to my share of Florida crime stories, but Ocean Floors stands out because it refuses to let the Keys off easy. Alex Robertson’s narration is the secret weapon here—his voice for Dan Coast, a man who’s won the lottery but can’t escape his own bad luck, is a perfect mix of world-weariness and dry humor. Robertson also nails the side characters, particularly a slippery dive shop owner whose accent and tone shift with every lie she tells. The production quality is top-notch, with clear audio that never lets the island’s humid atmosphere become a distraction. That said, the story’s biggest strength—its refusal to sugarcoat the Keys—is also a slight weakness. The body count feels high for a book this short, and some of the secondary characters blur together in the rush to uncover the truth. The ending, while satisfying, wraps things up a little too neatly for a setting that’s supposed to be rife with corruption. Still, these are minor quibbles. Ocean Floors is a punchy, immersive listen that will leave you questioning whether paradise is anything more than a tourist trap.
