I started OUR TRUTH expecting another tearjerker about sibling bonds, but Schwab delivers something far more unsettling—a story that refuses to coddle the reader. Virtual Voice’s narration is a masterclass in restraint; they deliver lines like “I stopped counting the number of times we moved” with the same flat affect one might use to order a coffee, and it’s brutally effective. The production quality is impeccable, with no distracting reverb or audio artifacts, which only amplifies the intimacy of the storytelling. That said, the pacing occasionally stumbles when Schwab shifts between timelines—some transitions feel abrupt, like slamming into a one-way mirror mid-sprint. And while I admire the novel’s refusal to tidy up the sisters’ story with a neat bow, the lack of resolution around their grandmother’s fate left me wanting more emotional closure. That’s not a flaw in the audiobook per se, but it does make the listen feel like standing at the edge of a cliff without knowing how to jump—or land. Schwab’s voice is the real triumph here, raw and unsparing, and by the final chapter, I found myself replaying sections just to soak in the unsteady courage on display.
