I’ll admit: I wasn’t prepared for how *unflinching* this audiobook would be. The first story, *Paintings from the Cave*, hits like a sucker punch—Paulsen’s stand-in, a kid adrift in a household where love is conditional and art is the only lifeline, is voiced by Kevin R. Free with such weary tenderness that I had to pause twice. His pacing is deliberate, letting the silences between sentences carry the weight of what’s *not* said. Sarah Grace’s turn as Jojo in *The Quilt* is the standout, though. She nails the brittle bravado of a girl raising her siblings alone, her voice cracking only when Jojo’s carefully constructed armor does. It’s a masterclass in how narration can turn subtext into a knife twist. The production isn’t flawless. The transitions between stories feel abrupt, like a record scratch where a breath would’ve helped. And while Nick Podehl’s Jamie in *Dogsong* captures the numb detachment of a kid failed by every adult in his life, his delivery occasionally tips into monotony—appropriate for the character, but tough to sustain over 40 minutes. Still, the audiobook’s strength is its refusal to soften the edges. The sound design is sparse (a distant bark here, a creaking floorboard there), but it’s the narrators’ performances that make this more than just a YA anthology. It’s a reminder that some kids don’t get happy endings—they just get moments of grace, hard-won and fleeting. Listen when you’re alone, and maybe keep tissues handy.
